I'm not dead yet!

Oh how I've missed this beautiful sanctuary called my book blog! So, I have a confession to make.... I might have bit off more than I could chew these last two semesters with school and work and while I have definitely kept reading books(only a few - sad I know), I haven't been posting reviews! *GASP* I know - its awful! I mean, what kind of self respecting book lover could read a book and not review it!? My only consolation is that technically, I have been 'rating' them - just not reviewing.

Never fear! I have a plan! I am cutting back my work load for school, so that while I stay at 'full time' status, it will not be at a breakneck pace where I can't even breathe. I promise to be more faithful to my books and their reviews, this I solemnly swear - as well as being up to no good!

P.S. - If you didn't get that last reference, I'm not sure we can be friends.

I'm so far behind!

It's true! I have already fallen so far behind in not only my reading challenges, but my ARC reads and posting of all of my reviews! Adjusting to my new schedule has been beyond difficult but I'm hoping *fingers crossed* that I will finally be able to post some new things this weekend. Don't give up on me yet, guys! I'm still here - just drowning under a mountain of a to-do list.

"Rare Form" - Jen Crane

Rare Form (Descended of Dragons #1)Rare Form by Jen Crane

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Title: Rare Form
Author: Jen Crane
Series: Descended of Dragons #1
Publication Date: October 2015
Genre: Fantasy

My Rating: 3 Stars

Summary:
Stella’s life fast-tracks to extraordinary when she enrolls at Radix Citadel for Supernatural Learning, an enchanted college whose students turn furry on the regular. As Stella learns to navigate the magical new world of Thayer she must also find her animal form, a task as elusive as her ancestry. Stella soon faces an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn to manipulate an animal form she never knew she possessed. (Excerpt taken from Goodreads.com)

My Review:

I feel like I am on one of those teeter-tot things that we all used to play on when we were kids in elementary school during recess. On one side, I really enjoyed this book; on the other side, I really hated parts of this book!

The whole idea behind the story line is pretty interesting and in a genre that is flat out overused and unoriginal, this book definitely stands out for its original parts. Its almost like one of those trendy t-shirts I see people wearing that says their year of birth with the tagline of "All original parts". This book should have that on its back cover... except more like:

"Published 2015"
"Some Original Parts"

HA! I think I'm hilarious. Seriously, I crack myself up. Anyways, I definitely liked the characters in this book but I am so over the potential love triangle and I really just want the main character to drop that G dude. I seem to always find myself rooting for the guy that never wins. Shame, really, the book would be much better for it.

I was a little thrown off with the 'pace' of the writing. It seemed to go really slow and then it was zero to a freaking million in 2.1 sentences, with a sharp downhill turn back to zero. It was like the best part of the book came out of nowhere and was over before I could really figure out what happened.

This series has me intrigued enough to read the second book with the hope that it converts me to being on the definite love side.

"Turn of The Moon" - L.P. Dover

Turn of the Moon (Royal Shifters, #1)Turn of the Moon by L.P. Dover

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Title: Turn of the Moon
Author: L.P. Dover
Series: Royal Shifters #1

My Rating : 2 Stars

My Review:

Just why!? Why do I keep reading these sure to be awful werewolf insta-love craptastic books. I just don't know whats wrong with me anymore. I'm like a moth to a flame... or better yet, a freaking bug to a bug zapper. I know it will be awful, but I just can't look away! Or rather, in this case, stop reading.

I guess I just keep hoping that if I keep reading this genre that I will end up finding another werewolf story to fall in love with. I mean, that's how I came across Kristina Espinosa's "Shift" but seriously, I beginning to wonder if its worth it any more.

This book was just god awful. With a slow moving plot that technically had two climaxes (trust me, it wasn't even worth it) and characters plucked straight from rent-a-bad-werewolf-cliche, this book offered little in the way of creativity and just couldn't hold my interest.

The worst part is I already downloaded the second book before I read the first and now I just keep having to look at the cover and think, oh gawd, there is no way I'm reading you.

"Created Darkly" - Gena D. Lutz

Created DarklyCreated Darkly by Gena D. Lutz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Title: Created Darkly
Author: Gena D. Lutz
Series: Kris Chase #1
Publication Date: December 2013
Genre: Paranormal Urban Fantasy
My Rating: 4 Stars

Summary:

Necromancer Kris Chase's purpose is simple. Blindly raise the dead for the primary elite, self necro-governed group, the Center. The problem is, she couldn't care less about what the Center expects from her. Instead, she is more content with snuffing out the life-force from every vile creature she can get her hands on; the same monsters her brethren indiscriminately create… for the right price.

My Review:

I was so extremely lucky to have been given a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for a honest review.

Heck to the yes you sexy kick butt necromancer chick! I absolutely love how freaking awesome this book is. This one completely took me by surprise. It wrapped me up and took me for a ride that I'll never forget.

What an awesome spin on necromancy and vampires. My mind is completely blown. I honestly haven't enjoyed a book about necromancers so much since Garth Nix's series. This was such a unique spin and has so much originality in it for a book that is part of an over populated dried out genre. I mean, seriously, I can tell you exactly how every other paranormal urban fantasy book will go and I can sure as heck tell you that every main character is a private investigator. This book doesn't go by any script and that's probably why I ate it up like I was starving.

This is definitely a series that I will be reading with zeal!

"Sapient Salvation 1" - Jayne Faith

Sapient Salvation 1: The Selection (Sapient Salvation Series)Sapient Salvation 1: The Selection by Jayne Faith

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Title: Sapient Salvation 1: The Selection
Author: Jayne Faith
Series: Sapient Salvation #1
Publication Date: October 2015
Genre: Young Adult/Science Fiction
My Rating: 4 Stars

Summary:

Twice a year, the alien Lord Toric demands a selection of human women between the ages of 18 and 20 to compete for a place in his harem. Maya must get through just one more selection and then she can marry the man of her dreams. She should have been safe, but when a young woman who was supposed to compete dies the day of the selection, Maya is forced into the competition.

My Review:

I absolutely devoured this book! I read it in one sitting and I was left wishing it hadn't ended.

This book is probably one of the best recipes that takes ideas from some other books and comes out of the oven even better than its predecessors! Think hunger games plus 'The Selection" minus the crappy reality T.V. angle (thank God!) plus just enough spicy originality and you've got yourself one freaking awesome book.

I absolutely could not get enough of this story! The characters definitely had to grow on me but the rest of the story made it easier to bear. I say this, because at first, the characters seemed young, dumb, and immature. Wow, that sounded harsh! I just meant that I wasn't too fond of them. I remember rolling my eyes around chapter two and thinking to myself that it was going to be another one of 'those' books. You know, cookie-cutter-paranormal-teenage-angst. Fortunately for me, this was so not the case. The characters actually drastically improved as the story built and I found myself hooked.

The world that the author sets up gets my geeky little book loving heart pumping and I swear, I'm like a middle school girl squealing and jumping up and down in my head. I absolutely can't wait to see how this is going to turn out. This book was such a tease. I am left wanting so much more!

Trust me when I say that you want to read this book! You won't be disappointed.

"Of Light and Darkness" - Shayne Leighton

Of Light and DarknessOf Light and Darkness by Shayne Leighton

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Title: Of Light and Darkness
Author: Shayne Leighton
Series: Of Light and Darkness #1
Publication Date: January 2016
Genre: Young Adult/Paranormal
My Rating: 2.5 Stars

Short Summary:

Raised by a Vampire in a secret society of Witches, Shifters, and Elves, Charlotte finds that she is the freak in her world of magic and wonder. When she stands before an army of impossible obstacles, the likelihood of survival in this coming-of-age modern fairy tale is slim, resulting in a war between light and darkness.

My Review:

I finished this book almost a week ago and I've just been beyond baffled on what to say about it. There were just as many good ideas, characters and interesting plot developments as there were bored-to-tears, that doesn't even make sense and why, oh why are we still reading about this moments. I thought if maybe I sat on writing my review that things would somehow become clearer and I would instinctively know what to put down in words, but I don't. I honestly have never had to try so hard to make a review happen. I mean, seriously, I usually just wing it and hope it flies.

Okay... deep breath...

This novel had a lot of moving parts in it which almost seemed to detract rather than enhance. There were a multitude of creatures, with some of them showing up half-way through the book, making me question if it was truly necessary for them to even be introduced. In a way, I understand that the author was trying to add more 'magic to the magical world' but it just seemed like overkill, even if the creatures were kind of cool.

This book was very.... dare I say it... A.D.D. Or better yet, almost like a three year old who is on a constant sugar high roller coaster with all the ups, downs and temper tantrums in between.

The characters were interesting due to the nature of the actual beings while somehow remaining so very one-dimensional. And to be honest, the whole "father-turned-insta-love-can't-live-without-you" relationship thing had me pretty grossed out. It was an inconsistency at best, and at worst, ruined 99% of the romance. It was a pretty big yuck factor. Also, another inconsistency that really annoyed me was that at first, vampires completely drain their kills and don't do multiple feedings as well as it says they can't survive on animal blood and then bam! Fast forward and we have a coven of vamps living on animal blood until Charlotte somehow becomes a one stop-shop all you can drink buffet.

I don't know, it just seemed so very off to me and most of the book was all about the weird lust between daddy vamp and Charlotte where I would have preferred to see more of the battle between the vamps and the fae. Oh, and it was definitely on the very 'young adult' side of the genre with the writing although the author pushed for a more mature, dark side that never really came through

So, in a nutshell... oh, who am I kidding? I could barely put my thoughts down about this one let alone sum it up in a sentence.

Title: Gifted Thief

Series: Highland Magic #1
Publication Date: January 26, 2016
Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal
My Rating: 4.5 Stars

My Review:

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.

Wowzers!!!!

Did I mention how fortunate I was to get a copy of this book!? Because, it wasn't just fortunate. It was as if the book gods looked down upon me and smiled. They said, our poor avid fantasy lover reader has not found a new series to fall head over heels in love with this year. We must remedy that. Here, have this book!

Okay, book gods and all aside, this was freaking fantastic. I mean seriously, it has the best recipe for a freaking amazeballs book. Its like the author made a check list of all things phenomenal and somehow managed to include every single thing on her list without even having to try! The book was absolutely along the lines of being epic with the author making it look effortless.

The characters are kick butt fantastic. I mean, come on! Who doesn't like a sassy strong female lead who has the worst jokes this side of the continent? Its just a big ball of awesome. A new twist on fae in a modern world has a needs no saving criminal with morals lead character with a midget sidekick genie with a knack for disastrous wishes and the ultimate hands-off-no-touchy-bad-boy-dreamcicle. Yeah, its that kind of awesome.

My only real disappointment is, that while I've been supremely lucky in receiving an arc copy of this book, who knows when the next book comes out!

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Title: Violca's Dragon
Author: Leilani Love
Series: The Dragon Ruby Series #1
Publication: November 2015
Genre: Paranormal Romance
My Rating: 3 Stars

My Review:

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.

I am delightedly torn over this book. I found myself fascinated with the characters and the plot through the entire book as well as wishing the author had left out the more 'erotic' scenes.

I personally thought that the romance, while not bad, definitely didn't need to be steered int he direction of erotic. In my opinion, it was almost an afterthought to add it in, in hopes of catching more attention from readers of the erotic variety. I would just as soon have the author leave that behind and focus more on the diamond in the rough story she has going.

The story... oh the story! Its not often I find myself completely fascinated and thoroughly immersed in a book in this genre anymore, but Ms. Love, certainly caught my attention. I loved the fact that I constantly wanted to know more. I felt like I needed to know more! It will be a lot of fun to see where this series goes and how the point of views will change throughout.

My honest to goodness favorite part of this book was the whole Kati and Scott imprint thing. I am just dying to know what will happen between them and see how this turns out! I foresee some seriously awesome installments in this series.

Ariel (Nano Wolves #1)Ariel by Donna McDonald

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Title: Ariel
Author: Donna McDonald
Series: Nano Wolves, #1
Publication Date: February 2015
Genre: Paranormal Fantasy
My Rating: 2 Stars

Overview:

Despite her sharp scientific mind and her degree in bio-molecular genetics, Dr. Ariel Jones hasn’t figured out how her life changed so much in a single day. Before she can blink and ask about what is going on, she’s being shot with a billion nanos and some very potent wolf blood.

Now she can suddenly turn into a giant white wolf with the blood-lust of a starving animal.

My Review:

I was given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.

If I had to describe this book in one word, it would have to be 'bored'.

While the idea behind the main characters' transformation into a wolf was intriguing and not something I have seen done before, I just found myself entirely bored with the whole book. It just didn't have that extra 'bite' that I was hoping for. Instead, it came across as very monologue-ish and entirely distant.

Too bad, because it was a fine idea.

He also knows he can just as easily be at their mercy-especially when it appears that one of them may be responsible for his brother's death. Unable to trust anyone, Jared takes it upon himself to hunt down his brother's killer-but the killer may be hunting him, as well.

My Review:
What is wrong with me?!?

I've had this book checked out of the library for-ev-vor... I mean, I was on a perpetual 'renew' cycle every two weeks for nine weeks straight with my local library until I realized that it was due without any more renewals left. Thank you so very much local library gods for having a borrow time length. If not, I might never have actually gotten to delve into this wonderful and amazing story!

This book was phenomenal. It was rich with court intrigue, murder, and mayhem. I loved the absolute mystery throughout the entire story and how the author wove together all the different ideas and theories. I thought it was actually pretty darn awesome how the book took place over the span of about a week. It made everything seem so much... "more". The emotions ran higher, the feelings were so fresh and raw and it gave a boost to the suspense of figuring out what was going on. It was a positively masterful idea on the authors part to have the story play out this way. I will definitely be continuing on in these series!

"The Hunter's Moon" - Beth Trissel

The Hunter's Moon (The Secret Warrior Series,#1)The Hunter's Moon by Beth Trissel

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Title: The Hunter's Moon
Author: Beth Trissel
Series: The Secret Warrior Series #1
Publication Date: December 2015
Genre: Young Adult/Romance

My Rating: 2 Stars

Overview:

Seventeen-year-old Morgan Daniel has been in the witness protection program most of her life. But The Panteras have caught up with her and her younger brother. Her car is totaled, she's hurt, and the street gang is closing in when wolves with glowing eyes appear out of nowhere and chase away the killers.

Then a very cute guy who handles a bow like Robin Hood emerges from the woods and takes them to safety at his fortress-like home.

And that's just the first sign that Morgan and her brother have entered a hidden world filled with secrets...

My Review:

I was very kindly given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.

This book was just not for me. While it has a very interesting idea, in fact, an idea I've never come across before in the plethora of shape shifting young adult books, the tone of the writing just absolutely killed it for me.

Basically, in a nut shell, the story and ideas of the story were well thought out and very intriguing but the absolute juvenile writing made me want to gouge my eyes out. Dramatic, I know, but I'm trying to make a point.

I can't even suggest this book to a much younger crowd though because some of the content is not something I would want my middle school aged child to read (if I had a middle school aged child that is). Its a shame really, because this one sure had the potential to be phenomenal.

Title: Frozen Tides

Series: Falling Kingdoms #4
Publication Date: December 2015
Genre: Fantasy
My Rating: 5 Stars

Overview:
Rebels, royals, and monsters wage war over the Mytican throne in the shocking fourth book of the Falling Kingdoms series, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

My Review:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

It can't already be over. I definitely did not wait for months and months for this beautiful gem to land in my hands for it to be over so quickly. I need more. I refuse to believe that I read this entire book in one sitting. It just possibly cannot, cannot be over.

This was everything I was waiting for and so much more. I absolutely cannot describe how epic of an author that Rhodes is. She continues to build this magnificent world where all the players have so much to lose and everything to gain. Its beyond amazing. Its breathtaking.

And the characters! Oh my goodness! I just love them all. I honestly have conversations with them, in which they talk back to me (of course).

Thank you and praise to the sweet book gods that Cleo and Magnus finally get their crap together!! I know I've been waiting for it to happen and I was able to breathe a sigh of relief when they finally managed to shut up long enough to stop arguing. (I say that like it was a problem, but in fact, I love the way their relationship plays out)

Jonas, my awful rebel. You need to figure your stuff out, my boy. I mean, my heart breaks for you when you realize too late who you love; but good grief man! Screw that head of yours on straight and kick some butt! Be that rebel burning with a cause and shine.

I'm still just not a fan of Lucia. I just can't wrap my head around miss all powerful sorceress who in all actuality is thew most spoiled, naive creature I think I've come across in this series. I'm sure she'll play a very important role or maybe, we can kill her off too before she makes anymore ridiculously bad decisions involving entities far more destructive and powerful than her.

Honestly though, who am I kidding? I sincerely love all of these characters and what they add to this absolutely epic story. I know only two things that I can write as definite concluding facts:

FACT 1 - That was an entirely mesmerizing installment in one of the best fantasy series ever written

FACT 2 - I need the next book now!

Summary:
Trouble is Elena Manory’s middle name and constant companion. Her adopted brother Lucas is missing and her body is going through further bizarre and surprising changes.
Killing has become second nature and distancing herself from the men in her life as a hobby.
But more trouble is on its way: The institute of Magical Intervention wants to harvest Elena’s blood for nefarious intent; the werewolves plan to dominate, feed and breed with her; and, to add insult to injury, a psychopathic vampire hell bent on revenge is relentlessly hunting her. Kidnapped and kept under constant duress, Elena’s salvation once again rests in the cold hands of the enigmatic William Granville. Blood is on the menu and her earlier fears of turning hairy at full moon are well founded. It’s time for Elena to sharpen her claws and kick some serious ass.

My Review:

This is still awesome series, but.... my God, can we please get to the freaking climax already? i need to know what is really going on and this continuous build- up with no release is starting to slowly kill me!

I love the writing though. The author does a phenomenal job capturing the exact tenor of emotions and the complexities of each individual character. Its just that I need... more?? Trust me, I'm just as confused as you are right now.

I just want to the story to keep moving forward and while yes, we definitely get some questions answered in this installment, I just feel like we are at a stand-still. In my personal experience, this is what normally happens in a trilogy and I call it the "the 2nd book filler syndrome". This is where I am at with this series.

Although, I am most definitely excited for the next installment, I just need it to be more than this one was.

My Review:

Another smashing hit in one of my new favorite series! I absolutely friggin' love these characters and the story that this author puts together.

I'm serious, these are my favorite characters of 2016. Wait.... I think I've just created a new goodreads bookshelf. Yup, I totally did. I mean it though, when I wasn't reading this book, all I was doing was thinking about Elena, Sebastian, Lucas, William... you get the idea.

This author is extremely original and she definitely keeps surprising me! Every time I think I might have something figured out, bam! I'm wrong. Being wrong has never felt so good. I keep getting these little hints of the upcoming darkness and I've gotta tell you, I'm totally hooked. Things are definitely about to take a turn for the worse and I know its going to be a fantastic third book.

My Review:

Fantastic. Fan-FREAKING-tastic. So unbelievably awesome. Thank you book gods for smiling down upon me at the begining of 2016 and seeing fit to bestow upon me a series worth biting into.

Its everything that the paranormal fantasy genre has been built on but so much more. You can not imagine how many times I was squealing and jumping up and down because my nerdy need for a good paranormal book was fulfilled. More than fulfilled. My cup run'eth over.

!!!!

I'm beyond giddy, if you can't tell. I'm serious. If I have to read one more wanna be paranormal Twilight copycat- I'm going to burn down the publishing company who published it. So imagine my absolute joy at finding a book with a complete and absolutely different kind of story.

Yes, we have werewolves and we have vampires and we have magic wielders... *ahem* Protectors. Not only that, but we have a kick butt, sassy, can take care of herself- don't need no saving here heroine. She is beyond bad-ass. She is like... the anti-Bella of paranormal books everywhere. Thank you Jesus!

(P.s. - I actually loved the Twilight series. The aftermath of unoriginal books trying to copy the epic that was Twilight? Yeah, not so much)

Bottom line, this book is A-mazing. Capital 'A' here! I highly recommend this book to anyone, everywhere.

Oh.Mer.Gawd.

Thank the book freaking gods that that book is finally over. I swear, I was so bored. Oh, I was so so bored.

There was absolutely nothing about this book that kept my interest and to tell you the truth, if I hadn't already chosen to use it for a reading challenge I am doing.

I just can't even. I'm so over it.

My Review:

For once, just once, I want the werewolf to get the girl. I mean come on. Werewolves are awesome. And they don't drink blood (ewwww!). Would it freaking kill an author to let the werewolf get the girl?

This book was a quick, mostly entertaining read. I definitely got sucked into right away due to how the author opened this story up. It made the characters feel just a little more raw and real.

I'm not going to lie, its the typical vampire, werewolf, kind of reminds me of Twilight novel. Except... hello, British style! Which made it a little different but sometimes just weird with how things came across.

Anyways, I still think its a solid read if you are in the mood for a book like this.

My Review:

*** I was very kindly given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review***

So....

.... If you read this book's synopsis, it says its perfect for fans of the 'Secret Circle' and Percy Jackson series....

Let me clarify that for you. It IS the freaking 'Secret Circle'. Percy Jackson? Nope. Not even close. If you really liked the 'Secret Circle' and want to basically read a clone, then this book is for you.

If perhaps, you are like me and wanted something similar but new and exciting... then this is definitely not the book for you. Or even if you you've never read the 'Secret Circle' then you might like it. Although, it is very over the top typical bad boy meets girl with extraordinary powers blah blah blah blah blah.

I guess I really want someone to enjoy this book because I personally loved the Secret Circle.
